Ronaldo Rules Out Playing for Portugal While Jorge Jesus Stays in Charge

Cristiano Ronaldo's future with Portugal has been thrown into fresh doubt after reports from Portugal claimed the veteran forward does not want to return to the national team while Jorge Jesus remains head coach. The standoff followed Ronaldo's departure from the training camp after a disagreement over his playing time. Ronaldo later issued a lengthy statement setting out his version of events. He accused Jesus of breaking his word over an agreement about playing time and said the coach failed to follow through on a separate understanding about how the situation would be explained in public. Jesus has denied that any such agreement existed. Despite the tension, Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from international football. He apologised to his teammates and to Portuguese supporters for leaving the camp and said he would remain available for selection after serving whatever punishment the Portuguese Football Federation imposes. The 41 year old is Portugal's captain and the country's all time leading scorer with 146 international goals. His exit came after an unused substitute appearance against Norway and before the fixture against Denmark. Attention now turns to whether the two men can work together again when Portugal's next international fixtures arrive.
