PTA Moves to Bring Onboard Internet and Mobile Calls to Flights in Pakistan

Pakistan is moving closer to offering internet and mobile services on airplanes. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has released a draft licensing framework for satellite communication services during flights, a first step toward onboard connectivity on domestic and international routes.

If approved, passengers could soon browse the internet, send messages and use mobile data while travelling by air. The framework would let multiple companies provide these services on an open basis, with strict rules covering data security, lawful monitoring and the use of local infrastructure.

One key condition is that mobile network services would operate only when aircraft are flying above 3,000 meters. The rule is designed to prevent interference with communication systems on the ground and to keep operations safe. Providers would also have to comply with both aviation and telecom laws before launching commercial services.

Industry experts say the move could bring Pakistan closer to international aviation standards, where onboard internet is already common on many airlines. It is also expected to open new business for telecom and satellite service providers. Authorities are reviewing feedback on the draft before giving final approval, and passengers may not have to wait long for connectivity in the air.
