Servaid, Pakistan’s Biggest Pharmacy Chain, Loses Its Saudi Backers

Servaid, Pakistan's largest and only franchised chain of retail pharmacies, has lost another set of investors, this time from Saudi Arabia, adding a fresh chapter to a turbulent corporate history. In nearly two decades of operation, the company has passed through four ownership changes, a record that has made its survival a recurring question. Founded by the Servis Group, Servaid has been controlled at different times by three families, seen two investor consortiums form and dissolve, and watched significant foreign backers walk away. The Saudi investors are reported to have exited out of impatience, though the account notes that unfortunate timing and bad luck explain more of the company's troubles than any single decision. The chain, among the best known in Punjab and beyond, is described as being in danger of collapse again after its most recent management change in 2015. Ownership turnover is linked to heavy losses and investor flight, compounded by the structural difficulties of pharmacy retail in Pakistan: a crowded field of small competitors, fragile supply chains, and a constant struggle to find dependable managers and staff. Successive management teams, the report adds, have either shown little interest in the business or been distracted by other ventures. The central question remains whether Servaid can steady itself and restore operational stability.
