Lionel Messi has played his final match for Argentina, closing an international career that spanned more than two decades. The 39 year old called his farewell the saddest day of his career after Argentina defeated Benin three goals to none in Buenos Aires on October 6.
The farewell came at the Monumental Stadium, where more than 80,000 fans watched Messi score one goal and assist two others in his 208th appearance for the national team. After the final whistle, an emotional Messi addressed the supporters, saying that wearing the Argentina shirt for over 20 years had been a great source of pride.
He described leaving the team as deeply painful, adding that he would have liked to continue playing for the national side for the rest of his life. Despite the emotion of the night, Messi said he felt the time was right to step away from international football.
Messi made his senior Argentina debut in 2005 and retires as the country's leading scorer with 126 goals. His career with the national team includes victories at the 2021 and 2024 Copa America tournaments and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The forward is expected to continue his club career with Inter Miami.
